A Pair of Islamic Turquoise and Cobalt-Glazed Ceramic Chess Rooks, 19th Century.
A matched pair of Islamic ceramic chess pieces, most likely representing rooks, of tall tapering form with flattened shoulders and domed knop finials. Each example is robustly potted with a gently narrowing body rising to a rounded projection at the top.
One piece is finished in a pale turquoise glaze with soft tonal variation and areas of glaze loss revealing the buff ceramic body beneath. The other is covered in a deeper cobalt-blue glaze, pooling more heavily within the subtle horizontal ridges that articulate its upper section. Both surfaces display natural earthen deposits and areas of abrasion consistent with age.
H: Approximately 7cm
Provenance: From a distinguished European private collection.
