A Pair of Islamic Turquoise-Glazed Ceramic Chess Bishops, 19th Century.
A matched pair of Islamic ceramic chess bishops of compact cylindrical form, each modelled with a gently tapering body and a projecting, beak-like upper element characteristic of traditional abstracted Islamic chess design. The pieces are robustly potted, with rounded shoulders and flat bases.
Both examples are covered in a soft turquoise-green glaze with natural tonal variation, ranging from pale celadon hues to deeper blue-green areas. The surfaces display mottled brown earthen accretions and areas of glaze thinning, revealing the underlying ceramic body along the lower edges. Subtle incised and impressed crescent-like motifs encircle the base of each piece, forming a repeating decorative border.
H: Approximately 4cm
Provenance: From a distinguished European private collection.
