Lot 160: An Indian Jain Tantric Painting of a Standing...
An Indian Jain Tantric Painting of a Standing Deity Figure, 18th Century or Later.
A vibrant Indian Jain tantric painting depicting a frontally posed deity figure framed within a tall rectangular format. The figure is shown with a prominent yellow face, large almond-shaped eyes, red lips, and stylised earrings, set against a deep red ground decorated with curling green vines and large purple blossoms. The figure’s body is composed of stepped geometric blocks in multicoloured squares of blue, pink, yellow, and green, arranged symmetrically down the length of the garment. At the centre is a circular medallion in blue and gold enclosing layered horizontal bands and architectural motifs. Above this, the torso displays small symbolic panels and rectangular compartments outlined in gold. Both arms curve outward with elongated fingers, the sleeves rendered in soft purple and yellow tones. Below, the lower register features miniature human figures, symbolic forms, and simple linear shapes arranged vertically within the stepped structure. The feet rest on a red ground decorated with floral motifs, enclosed within a golden border.
