An Indian Jain Tantric Cosmological Painting on Cloth, 19th Century.
An Indian Jain tantric cosmological painting featuring an intricate multi-panel composition. The upper register presents a sequence of rectangular scenes filled with numerous small, pale human figures arranged in varied poses against alternating red and grey backgrounds. Beneath this, a central deity with wide, almond-shaped eyes appears frontally, framed by a dense cluster of pink blossoms and leafy branches. The figure’s body is rendered as a stepped geometric structure, with a circular centre and radiating rectangular bands in red, yellow, and brown tones. The lower section displays an expansive circular diagram formed of multiple interlocking rings in shades of blue, red, and gold. Small human figures occupy compartments within the circular bands, surrounded by lively animals including tigers, elephants, deer, birds, and other creatures set against a deep green ground of curling vines and foliage.
