A Group of Four Islamic Turquoise-Glazed Ceramic Chess Pawns, 19th Century.
A group of four Islamic ceramic chess pawns of rounded domed form, each modelled with a gently tapering profile rising from a flat circular base. The pieces are covered in a rich turquoise-blue glaze with natural tonal variation ranging from deep cobalt-blue to lighter, almost celadon hues.
The surfaces are decorated in low relief with stylised foliate and spiral motifs radiating across the domed bodies. Some examples display fan-like fluting descending from the crown, while others are ornamented with scrolling vine patterns terminating in small spiral curls along the lower register.
