Lot 266: A Chinese Blue and White Porcelain ‘Dragon’ Vase...
A Chinese Blue and White Porcelain ‘Dragon’ Vase with Gilt-Metal Mounts.
A Chinese porcelain vase of baluster form, rising from a spreading foot to a narrow neck, richly decorated in underglaze cobalt blue. The body is adorned with sinuous five-clawed dragons amidst scrolling clouds, above a band of stylised waves encircling the lower section.
The shoulder and neck are further embellished with formalised cloud motifs and geometric borders, all executed in deep blue tones against a white ground. The interior of the neck is glazed, with a fitted gilt-metal mount forming the rim.
The vase is mounted with elaborate gilt-metal fittings, including a pierced base and a striking pair of opposing lion-form handles at the shoulder, each modelled rearing on hind legs with raised forepaws, framing the mouth.
