Lot 203: A Chinese Jade Carved Zoomorphic Sceptre Handle or...
A Chinese Jade Carved Zoomorphic Sceptre Handle or Hair Ornament, 19th Century.
The piece is carved in pale celadon jade of softly mottled tone, formed as a slender elongated shaft terminating in a stylised animal head. The head is rendered with almond-shaped eyes, a defined snout, and incised facial detailing, while the neck is encircled by carved bands suggesting collars or decorative rings.
The body is rectangular in section and decorated along its length with repeating scroll motifs in low relief, framed by linear borders. The terminal end is left more roughly finished, showing natural texture and areas of russet inclusions, and is pierced with a small circular aperture, likely for suspension or attachment.
H: Approximately 12.2cm
