A Pair of Islamic Glazed Ceramic Chess Knights, 19th Century.
A matched pair of Islamic ceramic chess knights of stylised abstract form, each modelled with a curved, forward-projecting upper section suggestive of the traditional horse-head silhouette. The pieces are compact and solid in construction, with gently rounded contours and flattened bases.
Both examples are finished in deep cobalt-blue glaze tones, now showing areas of surface variation and lighter earthen deposits across the bodies. One knight displays subtle incised vertical lines running down the side, while the other features faint linear striations and textural surface markings, giving each piece a slightly individual character while retaining a harmonious overall pairing.
H: Approximately 4.5cm
Provenance: From a distinguished European private collection.
