A Large Islamic Talismanic and Astrological Scroll with Magic Squares and Calligraphic Devices.
Executed on paper in ink, pigments, and gilt, the scroll is arranged in a series of horizontal registers framed by red and gold rules. The composition features repeating bands of bold Arabic calligraphy in black, green, and red, interspersed with complex talismanic diagrams.
Prominent throughout are circular astrological charts divided into radial segments, geometric constructions, and gridded magic squares filled with numerals and letters. Additional motifs include intersecting linear devices, looping calligraphic forms, and symbolic arrangements rendered in layered inks. Areas of blue and gold pigment highlight selected diagrams, particularly lunar and circular forms, adding contrast to the otherwise earthy toned ground.
