An Islamic Black and White Glass Chess Rook and Two Pawns, Probably Egypt or Syria, 13th Century or Later.
An Islamic glass chess group comprising one rook and two pawns, each formed in opaque black glass marbled with white trailing decoration. The surfaces are richly patterned with repeated feathered and scalloped motifs, created by combed white trails drawn through the darker ground, producing a rhythmic, wave-like design.
The rook is of broad rectangular form with a distinctive crenellated upper edge, the white marbling arranged in dense arched bands across the body. The upper section displays swirling white trails that converge toward the central notch, enhancing the architectural character of the piece.
The two pawns are of rounded cylindrical form with domed finials, similarly decorated in tightly repeated arched motifs running vertically around the bodies. The shoulders are emphasised with stylised leaf-like white trails beneath the knop, creating a cohesive decorative scheme across the group.
H: Approximately 3.4 – 4cm
