A Well-Carved Coconut ‘Bugbear’ Powder Flask, Probably Late 18th / Early 19th Century.
Of ovoid form tapering to a pointed base, the dark-toned coconut shell is intricately carved in high relief throughout with dense scrolling foliage and figural panels. One side features a finely detailed scene of two winged figures seated upon clouds, engaged in a central exchange beneath a garlanded border, while the opposing side depicts a dramatic combat scene with armed figures in stylised attire, set before architectural elements including a crenellated tower.
The body is richly worked with continuous vegetal ornament framing the narrative panels, the carving crisp and deeply cut, creating strong contrast across the surface. The flask is mounted with a brass collar and spout, fitted with a suspension chain attached via rounded mounts to the shoulder.
