Lot 287: A Chinese Blue and White ‘Dragon and Phoenix’...
A Chinese Blue and White ‘Dragon and Phoenix’ Covered Box, Chenghua Mark.
A porcelain covered box of compressed circular form, raised on a short foot, with a domed cover fitting neatly over the base.
The exterior is finely decorated in underglaze blue with a dynamic scene of a sinuous dragon and a phoenix in flight amidst scrolling clouds. The dragon is depicted with an elongated scaled body and outstretched claws, while the phoenix is shown with flowing tail feathers, both rendered in fluid brushwork. The cover continues the decoration, centred with additional cloud motifs within a circular panel.
A band of stylised scrollwork encircles the join of the cover and base, providing a decorative border. The underside bears a six-character underglaze blue mark reading Da Ming Chenghua Nian Zhi within a double circle.
