Lot 236: A Pair of Chinese Gilt Bronze Guardian Lion...
A Pair of Chinese Gilt Bronze Guardian Lion Figures, 18th–19th Century.
A pair of Chinese gilt bronze guardian lions, modelled in seated positions facing one another, each resting a paw upon a pierced brocade ball. The figures are cast with expressive open mouths revealing teeth and curling tongues, beneath prominent brows and stylised facial features.
Their bodies are richly detailed with scrolling manes and flame-like curls extending across the head, neck, and shoulders, while the tails rise and curl behind, terminating in stylised tufts. The surfaces display a warm gilt tone with areas of natural variation.
